Honestly Anthony, I have lost over $100 in Discus and still keep them.... Many times I have thought the same thing with them... I still keep them.

Yeah, those guys are pretty expensive as well. I wouldn't attempt them personally.

Oh, I forgot to update this. I had my water tested at the LFS today and I was told exactly what I expected... It was "perfect for a reef tank". The guy I wanted to speak with wasn't there so I asked the other guy I know. He had no idea what could have happened considering the water was great and my corals are showing no signs of distress.

My remaining Clownfish is still acting funny. He is breathing normally but all day he swam from one end of the tank to the other pretty fast. He didn't eat this morning when I fed him and the Watchman Goby (The goby ate like normal).

Does the live rock make it harder to maintain a saltwater tank? They guy at the store told me their easier to keep when you just have the fish... I've been wanting to set up a saltwater tank.

Live rock without corals is not hard to keep. It's just basically another filter for the tank.

I hear ya, stick it out and reap the rewards. Honestly, it truly is worth the extra headaches, and ummmmmm the extreme electric bills, and ummmmm, oh you get the idea. LMAO :)

I caught up with an old friend a couple of weeks ago that used to be into saltwater tanks. He said he had about 20 grand in tanks and fish. He sold all of his stuff and said he probably only got $6,000 for everything... I can only imagine the time and money that you guys put into that stuff...

It is a lot as the fish alone are around $20 or more per fish.... then there are the corals, the liverock $5.99 a lbs, live sand etc...

I had a guy at the store tell me that you can buy one of those Bio Orb tanks and make them saltwater. He was talking about getting one and putting Sea Horses in it. That sounded pretty cool. Would they work in a tank as small as 5 gallons?

I would beware as odd things like what happened to Anthony can happen more often with SW on those smaller tanks.....

If I were to make a SW tank.... 75 gallon minimum

Thats what I was thinking. I'm about to buy a 44 gallon corner tank. I was thinking about trying saltwater in that but I think I'm gonna try some African Cichlids. Their really pretty. I saw some blue and yellow ones that I really liked the other day.

I still wouldnt do a SW less than 75... that is me though... Kind of goes down to the more water the easier it is to keep the tank steady

That is true... My problem wasn't water quality related though.
I think God just wanted my fish for himself. :)

Understood... that stuff has happened to me many times with Discus... more than I would like to admit to.

    Re: Extremely Frustrated !

Personally I understand loosing the livestock is discouraging, and as much of a fan of planted tanks I still would recommend to you to pick back up, get back on the horse and keep going at that salt tank...

I have wanted a SW tank for years, you at least have a large amount of money invested in it. Much more than a few fish worth. Live rock costs more than all of the fish you have combined and corals are not cheap either..... You still have them.... get some more fish and take it as fluke like it is.

    Re: Extremely Frustrated !

Good response from LemonDiscus, a definate rule of thumb for saltwater, more is always better, although a biocube being run through a larger tanks filtration is known to house seahorses very well, but that bio-cube is the 29 gallon, it is approx. 3 years old know and has great success and many babies.

I know what Anthony is going through and the stress the fishes were going through seems to be eitherr electrical or a calcium issue, both of those can be part of the stress described, once I had to pick up a different buffer than I usually use and noticed myy fish doing a similar breathing scenario, the following day my normal brand was available to me, and after using that product, the stress has not showed up, I have since stayed with that particular brand, and hence extended periods without electricity, I have had minimal losses, which has brought me to spending the money for a hardwired generator.

Just a note, when I had experienced the stressed breathing with the "other" product, water testing had been within exceptable numbers, so I know not the reason, unless, saltwater fish are like some people, and just have to have a certain brand. LOL :)
