While doing the waterchange on the big tank, I had to move some of the guppy grass that has taken over part of it and I found 3 Mickey Mouse Platy fry!! They must have been in the grass for a few weeks because I can already see the black dots where the ears will be..... just makes my day!

how long will it take for plattys to have babies? I have 4 no clue if there m/f but i mean im sure at least is female or a male. Also since im cycling with these fish do you think they will wait to have babies until the water conditions are optimal.....?

females are larger and less colorful than males.
    Males have gonopodium when mature.

platys are like guppies..in that you need a high female to male ratio to prevent stress related issues/diseases.

no less than 3-4 females to every 1 male.

you would think the idiots at petco could have told me that......i went there once and ill never go back again, petco=2 minutes from house petsmart=20 min.............im taking the 20 minute drive from now on no matter what, ya i know at least 3 are males....now what do i do, i could get like 8 more females, but that would probbly over crowd my tank, and cut away my top water choices like the hatchetfish i wanted to get..........i would feel bad flushing a few males.........hmmmmm what should i do......???

you can keep just males (no aggression unless you stick a female in there)

Still go with the hatchetfish for the top layers
cory and kuhli loaches for bottom
and keep the platy for the middle and add something of size for the middle to go with them if you like?

Re: Fry Announcement Board (Announce your Baby Fry Here)

this morning i was getting ready to start tank cleanings and noticed something weird under one of the ordiments, it was a little 3/4 inch fry. i showed it to my wife and we started looking around for more and she found one under a sea shell and it's about 1/2in. these were found in our african cichlid tank, don't know who the parents are, just that their mixed-hybrids (not to worry though they won't be sold or given away, we'll keep them). when we set this tank up about 2 yrs ago it was suppose to be an all male mixed community. a few months ago we found out that we didn't have an all male tank, we had found a few fry then but didn't get them out in time and they got ate by the other fish. this time we got them in time, i made a fry container to keep the other fish away from them. when we did the tank cleaning we took out all the decor and looked for more fry and when i gravel vac i ran the hose in a tote insted of out the back door incase there was any hidding in the gravel, didn't find anymore,so we only have the two.

Re: Fry Announcement Board (Announce your Baby Fry Here)

i'll see if i can get a few pics latter or tomorrow. on a sad note, went to check on the fry just awhile ago and discovered that the smallest fry had somehow got out of the container. i hope it made it under cover and not as a snack. we were going to set up the 5 gal and put them in it, but our 2yr old got ahold of the heater and broke it and seeing how we are running the a/c and keeping the temp in the house about 73*. i had made a fry container out of a plastic Q-tip box w/lid, i had drilled several tiny holes in it for water flow and made a bracket to hang it on the tank. i didn't notice til the little fry was gone that where the lid snaps onto the box there was a gap and i think the lil one was able to slip on out there.
