    Re: Cory Cat Breeding

That is hard to answer. There is no guarantee at all that they even would. If the conditions are right, it might trigger a spawn. I've noticed that with mine, they will do their thing shortly after a water change. I don't do anything special as many folks recommend like lowering the temp and such. It just happens naturally.

I have albinos and bronzes...About 5 of each and ended up with fry recently.
I've been told if you drop their water temperature down a bit it creates spawning (like the rainy season)...They'll lay eggs typically on the side of the glass and they hardened VERY quickly.
WARNING: they will eat their eggs I've been told
*I removed them as soon as I noticed them.

Also, read they are supposed to lay eggs in the early morning..Mine did Mid-Day. ;)

I have a blackwater aquarium with the following:

    3 Angelfish
    5 Discus
    10 Glo Lite tetras
    4 Corydoras

Somebody in my tank keeps laying eggs all over the walls of the tank. I have a 125 gallon 6 foot long tank and they have clusters in about 8-10 patches all over the front and about another 2-3 clusters on each side. Some of these are fertile as they are clear from outside and inside look pink. This happened about 2 weeks ago as well.

    Here is my logic
Discus - should lay in 1 place and guard them (this would be true unless they just did not know how to raise young yet)

Angelfish - Not familiar with their spawning

Tetras - the eggs look a bit too big for them (again dont know about them)

Corydoras - I know nothing about their spawns either.

Who could be doing this? With these fish in the tank I would assume the mortality rate of any fry that hatch would be VERY high as the cichlids (angels and discus) would eat them unless they get under cover FAST.

I am confused and would love to know what they heck they are and how to find out and maybe figure out how to get the eggs off of the tank so I can put them in my lower tank that I have for fry.

If it were the angels I would think they'd be guarding the eggs as well.

I agree that is my thought too.

I have the same post on another board and one of the users is positive that the eggs are corydoras by the way I described the spawn.

Now time to figure out how to get the eggs off and into my lower tank so I can have baby corys!!!!

I actually have 2 albino corys and 2 blue corys so if there are genetic crossings (I think if it is them that bred that there will be as 1 albino an 1 blue always move together) they should make some interesting babies!

I should have set my lower tank up this morning and scraped the eggs off to at least give it a try raising them. Oh well. I bet they will do it again in another week or 2 and I WILL be ready...... hopefully!

Yeah, after doing some research it is the cories that are laying the eggs.

They should be clear/white in the beginning then after about 4 days turn grey. If they don't, they're not fertilized. If they were, after about 5 days they should hatch and look like mini tadpoles.

Yup that is what I read too. They do look gray (some) when viewing from outside the tank. Looking into the top they look reddish/pinkish/yellowish gray. That may be from the tanic acid in the water (blackwater)

When I get off work, I think I will try to scrape the eggs off and drain some water from my show tank down into my 10 gallon fry tank in the stand below the tank and see what happens.

Regardless if any live I think they will still have a better shot at life if they are down there away from my hungry discus and angels that will make a treat out of them.

Yeah, they'd be much safer in their own tank.

well the discus and the angels eggs will be in a cluster in straight lines and if you have a pair they will be guarding. so it would have to be the coys

You will not be able to scrape off the eggs without damaging them. Instead what you should do is remove the cories to the other tank, let them spawn then remove the adults and raise the cory fry in there.

The eggs on the tank right now I would leave. If you are lucky then you might be able to spot the fry once the eggs have hatched but they are very tiny and their will be hungry mouths looking for them too. But if you do find them, scoop them up with a cup to take them out. Keep them underwater the whole time, in other words, no nets, not even brine shrimp nets!!

    HTH and good luck!!! ;)

Hehe, while working with my sick discus I definatly found out who was laying the eggs. I watched my corys spawn on the glass. That was cool! It does not seem as though the other one that was with the female depositing the eggs was really doing anything. At least not with the batch I saw getting laid.

I moved the corys to the 10 gallon and they did not spawn for a month so now they are back in the community :(

Yes, yes it does..... kinda ticked me off.... they could do that and have their eggs eaten by the tetras but cannot do it when it is just them!

If can get the eggs right they are laid you can move them the eggs. I use a finger nail and put them in a plastic pan with a air stone and a few drops of methylene blue to help keep down fungus.
