At that size venting would be the only way to tell.

They are the product of breeding my adult electric blues, I am just trying to sell them to my LFS but want to sex them first.

how big are the fry? What do they look like? I have heard that most of the time the fry look like normal dempsies.

let 'em grow, and at about 2" some of the males should be showing some color

fry are anywhere from 1/2 an inch to 2 inches
they look like boring little grey fish, a mini color-less dempsey is a good description.

some of the larger ones are starting to color up now.

they are around 7 months old.

7 months and they're only 2" max ? That seems small to me.

Sounds about right, maybe somewhat slow, but large fish dont start growing fast till they get around three or four inches. Im hoping he gets real lucky and had electric blue babies, from what I have been reading there are only two people who are successfully getting the formula right to have blue babies, the other 99% of people are getting regulars. This is in the home aquarium mind you and doesnt include the labs and fish farms.

Its in the genes, yes your fish have the electric blue genes, but will they pass them down to the fry is the question? Its not hard to breed them just hard to get blue babies. I wouldnt be surprised if you had all regulars and maybe one blue dempsey. Ill find you a webpage with info on this and pm it to you since I cant post the link.

LOL...yeah, he has his blues confused I think. There is a variant of Jack Dempseys called Electric Blue Jack Dempseys, which are harder to breed, and generally cost more in LFS's. JD's are south american cichlids.

OOOO, now we are on the same page. Yeah, im talking about Electric Blue Dempseys that cost far more than these africans. Sorry I missed the hap in the first message, which is why I was so blown away that you actually had babies since most EBJDs are sterile lol.

There is often confusion with using common names. That's why accomplished fishkeepers learn and use the scientific names.
