how to tell if rocks are safe for aquarium use?

    Because it contains metals.

    o the vinegar reacts with the metals then, why not say that in the first place?

    then I'm out of it then, because I didn't notice is. but one more thing, wouldn't the vinegar only show if there is metal on the out side, meaning if the rock erode away just right it could hit a metal patch and be harmful to the fish?
