I'm positive I have some Jack Dempsey's (Came with a 55 gallon tank I bought off craigslist ) but there's a smaller one with similar markings, but (s)he is a gorgeous red color. Could it be a jack or a jewel? Also, if anyone is near me and would like these fish, please come take them off my hands. I think they're gorgeous, but I have 8 of them and they're quickly outgrowing the tank! :D

Yeah a Common Jewelfish (Hemichromis guttatus) is what it could be.

Isn't the red jewel south african cichlid? I thought they didn't get along with south american cichlids?

they are africans and if you want to lay a general blanket over things, yes most africans and south american cichlids dont mix, but its mainly because of water parameters needs that are different amongst the fish from the diferent locals.

So if I get rid of the Jack's can I put other south american cichlids in the tank safely? Like maybe a yellow lab or something?

Re: Jack Dempsey Cichlids / Red Jewel?

I dunno? Maybe not realizing that the species are seperate and that they shouldn't be mixed is my thinking?

There's still a lot of people out there that walk into a fish store and think "pretty fish" without knowing a thing about them and workers at these stores don't tell them anything assuming they already know/have mult tanks that their going in and just bag them and tag them.

I have a few of them in my area and frequently warn people with kids who are just picking for the sake of color and mixing things such as fancy guppies with a baby electric blue jack (of course I do it politely when the worker steps aside). Lol!

This one woman was buying 10 fancy guppies at over $3 a pop and her lil one was tugging on her shirt asking if they could get a froggy too...and the lady said sure...well needless to say she picked out an african clawed frog and told the girl to giver her 2 for her 10 gallon. The ignorant worker was actually bagging the frogs for her all while knowing they were going in a 10 with guppies! Talk about ill-intentions.

Too bad you live too far from me, I would soooo take that Jack off your hands. my Jack resided with Mbuna for a while when I got my first tank. I know technically it was taboo, but they got along and grew up together. I had a horrid pH drop due to a bloom and it killed all but Jack. Now he is in a SA tank. But honestly, he had no idea for 2 years he was not an Mbuna....LOL!! (My hubby hated me for putting him in with his Africans...LOL!!)

I like the electric Jacks that are popping up in fish stores! If my tank wasn't planted and community I would sooo have them!

My Jack leaves plants alone.....but will eat them if someone else tears them first.
