Leslie, I thought the first photo with the big cloud of Java moss was nice. A big moss pilow makes a great biofilter once it develops. I can see why you'd want to try something new, though.
    I love tiny tanks.

I am keeping some just not all. the java moss made it so there was no room for the fish to swim. so i broke it apart tied some to the pot and the other is just a big ball in the corner. i want to trade it for something else. another moss or something.

Driftwood adds so much to a tank! The only other thing I dont like is the rainbow gravel BUT it is your kids tank so fun is good!

Some say gravel is better, some say sand.... I like sand, I think it holds plants down better. BUT there are TONS that would disagree with that (Anthony)....

Honestly Gravel is easier to maintain though! You see, the waste that the fish put out turns into fertilizer for the plants. With sand, because it is so fine it cant fall into the sand and has to me mixed with it..... Gravel has all those holes between the particles, fish waste can fall right into it!

For that reason I would recommend gravel!

Wal-mart doesn't carry squat when it comes to tank substrate other than those little 2.5lb bags. Unless you get creative and go with their pea gravel.
