Okay so that shouldn't be the problem. I'll keep thinking and see what else I can come up with.

Get an RO/DI unit. I think the problem is the water.

Yeah RO water and Vitamin C will help a whole lot, there's not much else you can do.

I didn't even think of that. Try testing your tap water for nitrates and see what it says.

Okay great. I don't remember if I suggested this or not but have you dumped some Prime in there for the time being to detoxify the nitrates until you/we figure out the problem ?

yep i did that with some water changes and it actually went down to 30ppm...but they go back up the next day to around 50ppm.
hopefully i can find out the problem and keep them down for good.

Does it still read thirty ppm right after you treat the tank with prime?

no everything is perfect with the water in my city.....i'm just thinking maybe my tank is overstocked but it doesn't seem so to me, i have alot of rock and maybe there's debris under them that my crabs and snails can't get to.

that's the funny thing, not one of them is being affected by the high nitrates....they open up evryday, no sign of distress...

IME nitrate aren't really harmful, only in the long run do problems occur so hopefully we can get them down soon!
    How big is your sailfin?

It has to be something in your tank, I mean you said the water that was going into the tank has zeros across the board, and then magically becomes filled with nitrates there has to be something in the tank producing them. Or either your prime is actually working in the opposite manner.
