Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

I just got a petsmart ad sent to my e-mail that reads the 5 gallon eclipse is on sale for $39.99
For petsmart I'm sure that's a fairly good deal?
    ECLIPSE SYSTEM AQUARIUM

Yea, I feel for ya cowgirl...mine was the same way when it came to pets. Didn't/couldn't understand the want...and defin. couldn't rationalize the prices and care routine necessary.

It did until I edited it. FYI if you do this it will remove the actual URL and use what ever you type.

:) It's okay, I don't think many people know they can do that on the forum.

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

yea petsmart had there tanks on sale, but it was a small sale

yup they get REALLY REALLY TICKED for all the stuff that i need to take care of them now, and it's not even that much, my dad was like you don't need 4 tanks, and with the animals that i have in them, they need to be separated, but i found that out to late into having them

    nice looking lil tank.
You know you can stick that heater flat under the rocks if the cord will reach if you want. I had one of those in a lil sesame street tank for the nephew (heater pad thingey that is).
Unique rocks, do you find it's hard to clean around them (siphoning)?

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

thanks, and i'll try that with the heater, for the rocks all i do is rinse them off with water before i put them in the tank, but for my toad tank it is hard because of the eco-earth that i have for the bedding becomes loose and sticks on the toads then comes off in the water, so yea, it is a bit hard to clean at least for that tank, especially because a lot of the eco earth winds up floating at the top of the water then falls down to the rocks inbetween the spaces and on them, but i think for the tank with my frogs, it shouldn't be to hard to clean

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

thanks, i'm actually kind of liking the tank as it is, i don't know if i want to keep it as is and maybe add one more fake plant in there, or just wait a while and not add anything until i can turn it planted, what do you guys think? planted or keep as is

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

and that's what i want myself, but it's going to have to wait awhile, especially because of how pissed my parents are about the tank, *even though the said yes to me getting a different 5 gallon*

I like planted, as I'm sure you can tell. Do maybe 1 nice sword plant...you don't have to go overboard. That or do a fast grower that can quickly and easily fill the tank (clip and replant).

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

my parents even complained about getting a new light bulb for the tank, so it's going to be awhile until i can even get that. So then i'll guess what i'll keep what i have now and later i'll get the plants and all, because i think that the tank will be the most expensive part of this project. Then maybe the subtrate, but i looked at petoc's prepackaged plants and they really weren't all that expensive, just a few dollars, and they had a lot of different swords, do you think i would be able to do more than one kind of sword plant

With that size of a tank ...Nope...most swords spread out and in my experience with them will shade the other plants...in essence killing them by starving them for light.

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

ok, so my parent's might be ok with one and not yell at me too much, i'll have to wait a few weeks until the cool down then i'll be able to finally start it. which mean's i'll have to empty my tank out again and move all 5 frogs temporarley until i get the subtrate in And i honestly don't think the new light will be that expensive either. Subtrate might be a lil pricy though

Re: Want to turn 5 gallon hex to planted

why don't you go the cheap route? (goto your local wal-mart/homedepot)
Pea gravel (massive bag for under $5.00..rinse the crud out of it) OR
Pool Filter sand/play sand (costs a bit more..make sure no silicates are in ingredients...can vinegar/ph down test it--if it bubbles it can't be used).
*Note with either you will have a ton left over*

If you lived locally(which you don't) I could give you a bunch of green/blue gravel (leftover from experimenting with silicone)...even flat rate shipping you a bunch would run you 10 something...and you could use on of the above suggested for cheaper.

AS for plants you could advertise on the forum asking for unwanted clippings. at most it will cost you a few dollars?

*Hint* If your parents/you have/setup a paypal account you can win cash this month for the fish contest which would help pay for shipping.

<Makes mental note to remember to save clippings for fellow forumers>
