lol i have to have fish, i would loveeeeeeeeee to have a tang, but they would need soooooooooooooooo much swimming room like at least a 6 foot long tank. So i'm stuck with 5" and under fish. Wish i had the room and money for a larger tank.

well 6" is really more appropriate as they are extremely active fish, and my tank is only 3" maybe if i had a 5" tank i could get away with one

I would be the one to try and push it with a 4" tank still... :)

Ive seen it done before many times so I dont see anything wrong with it IMO... I know I have also seen Discus in 20 gallon tanks... it does not mean thats where they should live... but still a 75 gallon tank is a pretty good size tank... and its only 4" long (I know that is not what you have but still)

yea i think some tangs are good to go in a 75, i've seen it done as well, lol i wish my tank was just a foot longer. You should try SW with how you've masterd Discus sw would be a piece of cake

I dont own my own home and dont have plans to be in my apartment maybe but 1 or 2 more years before renting or buying a home... I wont get into SW until I dont plan on moving for a few years.... Too much work to move....

I do plan on setting up a tank at some point... I want a Lionfish tank with maybe a tang and an angel... also with SOME coral.... I have the idea in my head and I do plan on building my first SW in a 75 or even a 90... if I dont have one of those 2 tanks... I wont do it....

that's going to be an exciting project! lets hope you're eventually able to do it

i plan to leave home somewhere between 1-3 years from now, and i hate that i will probably have to break the tank down and sell it after putting all this money into it, and i still have to put a lot more money into it.

Yup... I cant justify that myself... its hard enough to justify the thousands that have went into these freaking discus! :)

At least I can move them without loosing everything... not easy but still easier than moving a SW tank...

haha lol if you've put thousands into Discus you will have no problem with the expense of SW

Yea i've been contimplating of what i will do with my tank when i leave home, i hate the idea of selling everything for cheap on craigslist after buying everything new and spending $2,000+ on this tank. And i hate the idea of moving everything. So what i may do is just sell the livestock, and keep the tank and equipment, to eventually get used again. Who knows though, it's still a ways away. And for now, i just want to enjoy it while i have it :D

I agree! I would do that too if I were you! Enjoy it... and I would keep the liverock and equipment... just sell the fish with the move... That way you dont loose it all and have to buy back into the hobby... I refuse to sell any of my equipment whether I use it or not... I am not selling it... WAY too much money put into it and I dont want to do it again... :)

Actually my wife and I sometimes go at it because of the amount of money I have spent on the Discus and SHE tells me a SW is out of the question now... she does not want me going Credit Card happy on more tanks... lol... I understand....

Heck, I am actually trying to downsize my stock of Discus for a while... Clear up some space for me to breed for a while... not so much to keep them on display... The evolution of keeping fish... :)

the only problem with keeping my equipment is i won't be able to get a bigger tank cause in the future cause everything is for a tank my size, even though the equipment is oversized. But i just don't see the point of selling, especially on my local craigslist, there are sooooo many reef tanks going for cheap *2-3k* considering how much this hobby costs you and i can't see myself loosing out on that much money.

hahaha. Well if you go FOWLR with a lionfish, the cost is not as extreme as a reef. lol and i know the credit card thing, it really hurts. Especially since i have my school on there for $300 and with only a $1k limit, things get tough, i have less than 200 available on my credit card right now, and i still have to buy a few pieces of equipment before i put any more livestock in.

We just took out a loan to pay off our credit cards... so we are not trying to put balances back on them! :)

We got sick of having to borrow money from family 1 time a month because we were out of credit and money... so...

yea it's got to be tough. i know it's tough with the bills i have, and i don't make that much maybe max $1500 a month, and that's with me being 20 working part to almost full time, and that all goes straight to bills.

I can't imagine how hard it is living out on your own with all those tanks, even with another person helping with bills. When i move out i don't think i'll be able to set up another tank right away, especially since i will be having even more bills than i do now, and have the added expense of my horse

Its tough and my wife and I actually make a fair amount of money... 2 car payments... rent... electricity... gas... food... diapers... clothes (kids)... cell phones... insurance... and I know there is more there that Im missing... well they all take quite a toll on us...

The tanks... well actually I have put a few hundred in here and there with them over several years so the thousands that went into them were not really felt... until the fish that cost $100 died the next day  That did happen one time... ok... more than once... and it was all my fault... expensive mistakes to make in this hobby...

Yup! I have had that happen about 4 times in the past 2 years with Discus.... Not too bad but ALWAYS the same mistake (you would think I would learn!) The mistake is adding another discus to a single discus (why I tell EVERYONE to buy more than 1)

I just bought a male a few weeks ago (maybe a month or so) and put him in with my female that has not been breeding with the other male... removed the Red male and put the new one in... the next morning... he was almost dead... she had beaten him up to death! I went to work and got home and he was dead... nothing I could do but watch a $100 discus die (the sad part was he was 2x her size!)

aww poor male. That's also got to be the hard part about discus. At $100 a fish that has to be really hard, especially if you have to buy at least 2 each time, i wonder how much the discus' were at the lfs were, usually they have prices on tanks, but i didn't see any price on the discus

You see a lot of shops her in Florida display Discus that are not for sale, most will order for you but, don't want the expense and risk of stocking the fish.

Same here Rick... And no, if you have some already you can buy just one... it depends if you have a stock of fish (discus) or not...

There is one store here that has about 50-100 Discus at all times... he has FW Stingrays too! Nice shop really... he is expensive though overall... but usually well worth the extra cost...
