The rocks come off though after a few months! I think most of mine will stay down now and it has been a month (I say this cause I was fiddling around a week ago and knocked one over and it did not float up. Still nervous to check though. And the rocks still look a bit natural. Its not like I have a brick on them! I just arrange the rocks to look like they were meant to be there or hide them with a large plant.

Leslie - You have to drill a hole in the slate and then bolt the wood to the slate from under the slate if that makes sense.

YES if its not from the store.
If it came from the store even, boiling does help it absorb water faster. An hour or 2 boiling and it may stay down on its own. Problem is all the wood I have ever added is too big for the biggest pot I have so I had to bake in the oven.

I would boil it for a few hours. The longer you boil the less likely it is to stain the water yellow and the sooner it will sink. If you have the patience to do it, boil it for like 4-6 hours and you may not even need the rocks!

Lol, you just screw the base to the wood.
    Pretty easy actually.
Either way would work perfectly though!

I agree, better safe than sorry!
Especially when it comes to something going into an aquarium, I'm sure most of us can vouch on how the littles thing can cause the biggest disaster!

How much did you start with? I bought 2 golf ball size portions (when you take the moss out of the water and compress it) Neither of the 2 have grown much.

I see the use of screws, couldn't you use silicone to add it to a base or piece of slate?

I thought the vinegar test was just to see if it contained calcium? also I was told by someone at lowes that galvanized screws would probably affect the water chemistry if submerged. You can also use silicone but the wood hasto be dry and you have to use a huge amount (I've tried)

Rocks generally will have a similar composition throughout it's entirety if I remember correctly.

I think between the vinegar and boiling for about 1 hour would take care of the pop rocks.
