I like the 90/10 idea, might give the sand a little more holding strength making it harder to stir up. Also, I think the little shells, etc mixed into the sand would look pretty good!

Yeah, that's what I was hoping for. When I had all sand in my convict tank they were always stirring it up and it got into the filter and it would make a horrible noise. I hated waking up at 1am because of that.

its never good to wake up to a grinding clicking noise haha. I dont know about saltwater fish, so I am wondering if they would be as bad as convicts at stirring up substrate.

there's some that make it there hobby!!!!
i had an engineer goby that used to dig holes and tunnels everywhere.....
had piles of sand on the glass of my tank.....
but now i don't have filters just a kickass skimmer and a big sump with lots of flow.

Will, how do you get by without a filter, were you able to do that from the start or did you have to establish the tank for a while before you went filterless?

From what I've read online, and Will correct me if I'm wrong, skimmers also do a lot of filtering. Because of the salinity the waste that normally sinks in freshwater tank floats and is picked up by the skimmer. Almost the same way a filter does in a freshwater tank, which is why the intake is lower in the tank.

Awesome anthony! I was looking at some of the stuff in the saltwater section a few days back and I was wondering what flourite substrate was used for, and if it can be used in a FW tank?

As far as I know it's for freshwater. I don't know what would happen if it were to be put in saltwater. I bet it would break down really quickly.

I'm going to go early tomorrow and get my stuff hopefully ! [dancing] [dancing] [dancing] [dancing]
