Yeah, I have it unplugged now. I'll probably go get a damsel or two tomorrow. I didn't pay attention when I was at the place today but I'm pretty sure they have live rock. I know they have some really nice corals at what I think are good prices.

have you looked into tampa bay saltwater? I've heard lots of great things about them and I like that they aren't hurting actual ocean areas with live rock, they make their own live rock in a little section off of florida.

Thanks. That seems high after you pay shipping though.

yeah its a lot, but it seems like a lot better lr than you get from the LFS this rock barely leaves the water so there is little die off. The lr I bought for my tank from my lfs was horrible. I don't even think there was anything alive on it but at the time I didn't know what I was doing.

Ill pay a little more to not destroy the natural reefs via live rock removal.

The live rock I've always bought has been pretty nice.

The very top part of the skimmer, is it supposed to be foamy up there ?

yep, that's the skimmer collecting all the sludge.....it will take time to break in also....when you set it up you want the chamber to produce as much foam as possible but not to have air pockets....you can always check out the pic of my skimmer to get the idea.

Well, when I had it running earlier it wasn't foamy at all. Is that normal ? I assume so since there isn't much, if any protein in the water ?

basically there's nothing there and you have to tinker with it at first and wait for it to kick in which could take at least a couple of days.......

Okay. I'll be reading the booklet it came with tomorrow. I know absolutely nothing about skimmers.

    Yeah, I'm sure I will. :D

It's cleared up completely now, from what I can see in the dark. That SmartFilter seems to work pretty well. I love the heater that goes in the intake tube.

I ended up just using the coarser sand and a few cups of crushed coral. I guess I'll save the other sand for a bit. Hopefully it doesn't go bad within the next few months.

the deeper your sand bed the better...you should just put it in.

the live sand you buy in the bags never really is alive anyways, from what I've read it seems that its a waste but since you got a deal on it doesn't really matter much.

Okay, I'll mess with it tomorrow morning then.

I wondered about that. They have dates on them but I'm not sure if that's any reassurance that it's really "live" or not. LoL You can't beat 5 dollars a bag for something that's normally almost 40 though. ;)
