Trichogaster trichopterus will be about 4" when fully grown.

Croaking Gouramis will be about 5" so they'll work pretty well.

Edit: I take that back, it's 5cm not inches.

hmm, dont see croaking gouramis on that fish place or liveaquaria. ok never mind then. ;)

would one say that Trichogaster trichopterus would be too small? [scratch]
    any other recommended attractive fish?

They may work but I wouldn't go any smaller than 4" with anything.

Steatocranus sasuarius may be an interesting fish to add.

This chart may help you out a bit too, as a general rule.

Steatocranus sasuarius buffalo head cichlid.......interesting looking. read it is rather shy so it may hide in the tank. not quite what i am looking for.
i saw that chart on liveaquaria. basically puts a caution on any cichlid.

so it looks like the blue gourami is the favorite.

i wonder if all gouramis are fin nippers? only other fish that would be in there would be the sev. would have to be crazy to nip him.

also read rosy barbs get 6" not very attractive fish though.

I doubt very much they would bother the severum. :)

I had I believe the rosy barb before and it got a nice deep reddish color.
    Barbs can be nippy too.

    borrowed>
    Scientific Name(s): Heros sp. 'rotkeil'
    ROT-red. KEIL-neck
    Maximum Size: 8 inches
    Life Span: 10 years
    Natural Habitat: South American Rivers
    Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
    Tank Region: All over
    Temperment: Territorial
Possible Tank Mates: Other similarly sized new world cichlids
Ex:New World Cichlids such as the Firemouth, Green Terror, Salvini, Texas, Blood Parrots, Plecos, Chocolate Cichlids, Praecox Rainbowfish, corydoras', rosy Tetra, black banded Leporinus, butterfly fish, zebra danios (usually too fast to be eaten) and rasbora.

Blah Blah Blah>Oscars are generally considered to be good tankmates for severums, along with firemouths and convicts from the smaller end of the scale. Other fish such as Green Terrors and Jack Dempsey's have also been mentioned as good tank mates, but with such aggressive and territorial fish, you should be ready to remove one or the other if things do get out of hand. Severums usually co-exist in relative harmony with armoured catfish, so many plecostumus species can be considered. Severums will generally not bother smaller, non-cichlid species such as tetra's and usually will not consider these fish to be much of a threat. Spawning time for Severums is always interesting, as they can get quite aggressive. Often tankmates that have been tolerated in the past will suddenly be viewed as the enemy.

lots of great info. didnt want to get into territorial fish. so aggresive fish are out.
still like the gourami......would like a similiar sized fish to a severum that is not aggresive.

Severums can be aggressive so you'll actually want smaller fish that are as well. Peaceful fish won't stand a chance.

I've never seen tetras be recommended for such large fish.

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=830+836+2522&pcatid=2522" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod ... catid=2522</a>

i agree anthony....peaceful fish have no business in this tank.

Those would be GREAT ! Even though they're technically peaceful fish they're large enough to not be viewed as prey.

just my 2 cents and not knowing anything about them, but I like these>black banded Leporinus and have always like the blood parrot (although disagree with the man made...and dye bit).
