So i'm sitting here watching my betta in my 10 gal tank. The fighting doesn't seeem to be to bad. I've seen that he's been flaring up and swimming really fast. He's the only active swimmer in the bunch but i think he may be fin picking at my other fish considering how peaceful everyone is, but the betta seems to be enjoying it, or is stressed out so i may have to put him back in the 5 gal with the evil guppy

if you do get a heater for the tank, do not just throw it in there and set the temp on 80, you will need to slowly raise the temp a few degrees every few hours.

If money is an issue look do a little on-line research. Try Drs foster smith they have good prices, however the shipping will get you if you only buy 1 item. I usually can find what I'm looking for on e-bay for pretty cheap. I was looking for one the other day and I found this for 12.99 with free shipping:TETRA SUBMERSIBLE HEATER HT10 - 50W, UP TO 10 GALLONS. Just look under pet than fish then heaters. Hope this helps

ohh, was it some like rubber thing? right now it's not turned on, cause it's in the 80s right now, do you think it would be safe for me to just have it plugged in at night, when it gets the coldest

Yeah, it was maybe 4" long and rubberized and it looked like it was filled with little beads. I can't remember how they work but I think it's supposed to keep the tank in the mid 70's. I'd try plugging it in and see if it raises the tank temp, if it does unplug it until you need it. A stable temp is what you want though.

I would leave it plugged in at all times, if its warm enough it wont be on anyway, is it the little ones from walmart? If so, I used two of those guys to heat my 55 gallon tank for around 6 months, they did a great job of keeping the tank at 78 degrees.

I had one of those on my nephews lil aquarium..it was a small all in one setup with the tiny night light (sesame street); I have to say it did a good job at maintaining a steady temp...but mine was the flat hydor one that went under the substrate.
