    Re: snails

Squish them is the answer I usually give for these little boogers.

Please make sure to target feed your P. Diffusas (mystery snails) they need a diet rich in calcium for optimum shell growth, trust me without it they won't be pretty for long.

I've had mystery snails for years, I've never target fed and have never had a shell issue as of yet (don't jinx me) Lol!
And of course, they have bred prolifically to the point where I ususally take excess to my local lfs when they get too numerous in numbers.

What do you feed them? They have no shell erosion or growth lines?

I split these posts from the other thread to keep the topic on track.

    Re: Mystery snails

nope, I feed the community tank variations of:
    Hikari Algae Wafers
    French cut Unsalted Green Beans
    Tetra Color enhancing Flakes
    Spirulina
    Frozen Bloodworms
    Frozen Freshwater Variety pack
Frozen, freeze dried, and Live Brine Shrimp
    Hikari First Bites

No Need to worry, my tank is doing fabulous...I'm not a newb at this and have been at it for many years (although I am new to the heavily planted scene). Thanks for the apparent concern for the snails though; although honestly they are living high off the hog so to speak.

    Re: Mystery snails

I'd like to know what you'd recommend feeding them. I have a snail whose shell isn't looking so good :(. ((Possibly because I seem to have a lot of trouble keeping my pH stable...it drops fast, I keep treating it to bring it up, but I figure there has to be a better way. I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing *wrong*...this is the first time I've had this problem.--probably a discussion for a different thread.))

    Re: Mystery snails

Depending on exactly what's in the tank 7.2 should be fine. Always keep in mind, a more stable pH is always better than one that keeps changing.

    Re: Mystery snails

That's just water straight from the tap...the pH quickly drops once it's actually in the tank with the fish.

    Re: Mystery snails

The problem is the pH isn't stable...within a couple days it drops to 6.4 or 6.2...it and then lower.

You have something in your tank or are adding something that's lowering it then.

    Re: Mystery snails

I don't think it's anything I'm adding. Unless amquel is a problem. I have a piece of driftwood in there, I was told it had been properly cared for before I got it, I have sand as my substrate, but I made sure that was safe as well. Fish and some aponogeton.

    Driftwood lowers pH.

    Re: Mystery snails

ha! very interesting. I was told that it would help stabilize my pH and help keep it from dropping...go figure.
