I just bought a female yellow lab to go with my male but he chases her around to where she dont want to come out. How can i get them to breed if he scares the crap out of her.

It will probably take time.... Cichlids are territorial to begin with.... spawning and mating rituals take time.

You should also have more than one female with the male to cut down on aggression.

Yeah, you need more females. Is there plenty of rockwork and wood in the tank? Males will bully the females unless they're ready to spawn, and they won't be ready to spawn when they're stressed. They need lots of space to hide out. What else is in the tank?

Agree with everyone else, Higher female to male ratio...more hiding spots (holey rock works great, or any type of decor that has holes in it for the fish to feel secure), and regulated lighting.

How do you tell the difference between a male and female lab? I just setup a new tank, cycling as we speak, and I plan on buying a few yellow labs for it...

With Yellow Labs you really can't tell visually.

    Re: yellow labs

Borrowed Knowledge: Typically the male will be a bit larger, have a much deeper color and darker pelvic and anal fins; however, it's hard to be sure until their about 2 & 1/2".
    You can also vent.

I love the fish. I plan on getting a few hopefully in the next few days. I posted some questions in the Cichlid area of the forum. Looking forward to some good info!!!

    Re: yellow labs

The males have black edges on their pelvic and anal fins, and the females don't. This usually showed up when mine were about 1.5".

    Re: yellow labs

It's because that's a very common misconception as to how to sex Yellow Labs. Yellow Labs can only accurately be sexed by venting.

My female Yellow Lab had much more black on her fins than the male.

    Re: yellow labs

Anthony is correct with the venting being the only sure fire way to sex a yellow lab
