Here's another topic related to yours....you can see how dangerous it is when heaters malfunction!

When water temperature sensors go bad

Ps. I have the Rena Smart heater...so far so good, and love the fact that the entire dial glows red when it's on so theres no guesswork!
Also the entire dial will flash when the temp is off by too much...yet another plus.

    ~Good Luck!

dude, i hate my current heater, i can't wait until i can finally use the new one. With my current one, the temp goes very high in the upper 80s-90s, then i'll turn it all the way down then that will at least get it to 82-75, and then i'm still not happy with that, so then i just unplug the stupid thing and then it will go down to a comfy 78, i also hate my protein skimmer as well, but that's another story :D

    Broken heater
I just got a heater from petsupermaket for a pretty good price. However, I am not sure that it is working, the light never comes on to signal the heating process, I have another heater in there that does come on and my temp will fluctuate from 77 to 82 (I have it set on 80, both of them). Is there anyway to test my theory of a doa heater? Does it sound doa?

I'd take it back and exchange it. If the light's broken I'd be worried that if it does decide to work at some point it would fail in the on position and that wouldn't be good.

Yeah, that's how I was too. That's why I order from Big Al's most of the time.

You can test it by sticking a thermometer in the water before and about a hour after...if no change you know you have a dud.
Sounds like it to me, just about every heater that I know of has a red light to signal it being on?
Try bigals or petsolutions..they both are reasonable and you can ususally score coupon codes to top the savings off ;)
Oops. petfooddirect is another good one (at least when they offer the extra 22% off with their coupon code..can usually find it online).

Ive got two thermometers in the tank presently, I returned the heater and bought one that was way more expensive and it is doing the same thing, my temp is remaining around 81 as it is set, but the only one that seems to be doing the work is the small 100 watt heater that is in there. Maybe today I will lower the temp on the small one and see what the big one does.

?hmm...only thing i can think of is the small one is set too high, thus not giving the big one a chance to turn on since the small one is meeting the required temperature.
But then again theirs always a slight chance your coming across some defective stock?
I myself have the rena heaters...they work great...and the whole disk/round temperature dial will light red to let you know its working. Will also flash if radical change in temperature to let you know somethings wrong (instruction manual will reflect it)..and amazingly their pretty accurate according to the dial number.
    ~Good luck

crank it up all the way and in about 5-10 mins put your hand in the water next to heater if it doesnt feel warm it aint working if it is warm set it to where you want it and on the other end of the tank from the first one in there
